The main research areas of the Department of Computer Science of University of Kuopio are software engineering, structured documents, parallel computing, intelligent systems and embedded systems.

The department belongs to the East Finland Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering.

The degree programme of computer science has three lines: software engineering, computer science and information and communication technology.

The department takes part in the International Master's Program in Information Technology (IMPIT) and the Cross Border University (CBU).
